The Umbrellas of Cherbourg…for spring? Groundbreaking.
Welcome to Taurus Season! A sign of luxury, sticking stubbornly to your values, and love, undying painful love. This Taurus Season, and future Taurus seasons, will be marked by the tension of a constant Pluto square with any planets in Taurus. The proverbial meddling mother lurking in the corner, questioning and confusing your wants and desires with hers. (un)Fortunately Taurus season promises to be a time of change, transition, and transformation-something a Taurus hates, but is a consequence of time & space. To prepare yourself, brush off your high school French-English/English-French Dictionary and dive into the colorful world of The Umbrellas of Cherbourg.1

I would like to start off this horoscope by saying that Geneviève (played by Catherine Deneuve who is about to be catapulted to stardom) is 17 and everyone else is a grown-ass adult.
Big agree girly-pop
ANYWAYS Geneviève (aforementioned teenager) lives in Cherbourg with her mother-the vain, scheming Madame Émery (Ann Vernon in power suits and fabulous costume jewelry). Together they run an umbrella boutique and live the psychedelic art nouveau wallpapered apartments above the shop. Geneviève loves Guy (Nino Castelnuovo), a twenty-year-old mechanic, in the painful way only a seventeen-year-old can. Which makes Guy being drafted all the more excruciating. Geneviève’s mother disapproves of the match believing that Geneviève is too young to declare her love for Guy…but that doesn’t stop her from pimping her out to jeweler Roland Cassard (Marc Michel). The love triangle gets all the more complicated when Geneviève becomes pregnant.
A musical in the sense that all dialogue is sung as recitative, there’s no real song in The Umbrellas of Cherbourg (apart from the haunting main theme) that you’re going to walk away singing after watching. Ultimately, The Umbrellas of Cherbourg is a film about choices: the ones you make willingly, the ones you don’t want to make but have to, the ones that force your hand. After a series of retrogrades that plagued us for the first part of the year, Taurus season now allows us to make choices using what we’ve learned from the first 4 months of the 2025. And really…sometimes you just have to make a decision with the information you have and live with it.
When the Sun delves into Taurus from fast-paced Aries season, we take life at a slower pace. A Taurus doesn’t believe in being rushed. It’s not that they are lazy, just that they do things in their own time. Like rushing a Hollywood starlet while she’s doing her makeup, you’ll find better results if you allow a Taurus some time and space.2 Taurus answers to Venus, the planet of love, aesthetics, and values. Luxury in all things is key-quality clothing, gorgeous wallpaper, chic umbrellas, beautiful jewelry, etc. etc. A Taurus, like Madame Emery, considers taste above all things. So, when the Sun moves into this solar season on the 19th, take the methodical approach to your life.
On the 23rd, the Sun forms a tense square to Pluto, change is lurking around every street corner. A square between two fixed signs is bound to bring power struggles, a battle of wills between you and your conniving mother for example. However, you would be remiss to not utilize this day as a motivating force to go after what you want. This transit sets you up for the lunations happening this Taurus season: A New Moon in Taurus happening on the 27th of April and a Full Moon in Scorpio on May 12th.
When the sky goes dark with a New Moon, it’s time to plant the seeds of intention surrounding your relationships and personal values. When the sky is illuminated by a Full Moon, it’s time to reap what you sow. While power dynamics may be playing in the background (the Algerian War, Mars opposite Pluto, etc.) you can never go wrong with following your heart. And sometimes following your heart is not the romantic, painful decision the cinema makes it out to be. Sometimes following your heart means coming to terms with desiring stability and security-which isn’t the sexiest desire anyone has ever had…and yet?! Actions lead to consequences, but consequences aren’t intrinsically “bad” or “good,” they just are consequences. Love doesn’t have to be dramatic and painful-in fact it shouldn’t! It can be when you’re a teenager,3 but the older you get one should hope that our emotions are regulated enough and we’ve lived a little to know that love is a partnership-for better and for worse. Finding balance between your head and heart is the best way to take advantage of the lunations during Taurus season. Sometimes you pick the guy with the steady job who will take care of your unborn child. Sometimes you pick the woman who has secretly pined for you and won’t desert you. Both are fine decisions. Life goes on.
Venus returns to Aries on the 30th, now moving forward and gaining speed! She’s out dancing at a feverish pace and can’t be stopped during Taurus Season. With the Sun answering to Venus in Aries, we can expect Taurus season to be a brightly colored-like the streets and apartments of Cherbourg. It also may denote a little more selfishness than usual. Venus thrives within relationship-oriented signs, like Taurus and Libra. When Venus is in Aries, she’s striking out on her own and making decisions that best suit her, not her boyfriend overseas. When Mercury arrives in Taurus on the 10th of May, thoughts are not rushed. Communication is deliberate, practical, and maybe a little bit more direct as Mercury answers to Venus in Aries. Those with a natal Mercury in Taurus, or really any Taurus placements, are often picky about sound-the timbre of their lover’s voice, the music they put on while washing the dishes, etc. All sensory aesthetics are very important to a Taurus, not least the voice. Be careful how you sonically deliver your lines-in a sing-songy recitation style or not.
Unexpected freedom, rebellion, and change comes on the 17th of May when the Sun squares Uranus. You’re bound to have an open mind about everything and anyone that comes your way-handsome mechanic or Parisian jeweler. While this transit has the tendency to feel erratic, with both Sun and Uranus in grounded stable Taurus, actions taken won’t be earth shattering so much as maybe the unexpected but correct course of action.
If you wanted to dive back into your French studies Umbrellas is kind of a perfect French 101 exercise. The songs are sung slow enough that you can grasp the words and meaning fairly well.
Love the moment when Geneviève says, “Should I wear makeup?” and she’s clearly wearing impeccably crafted winged eyeliner.
I cannot emphasize enough that she is indeed 17.
